Black Magic Sanction

Book # in Series
Black Magic Sanction is the most complex and emotionally charged adventure yet in author Kim Harrison’s New York Times bestselling series featuring bounty hunter-witch Rachel Morgan.  A spellbinding story set once again Cleveland’s vampire, demon, and other supernatural beings-infested Hollows, Black Magic Sanction has the intrepid Rachel trapped in a life-or-death battle against her own kind in a sensational urban fantasy that shows why Kim Harrison deservedly stands in the superstar ranks alongside Charlaine Harris, Jim Butcher, and Laurell K. Hamilton.

A young witch is trying to survive in a world that doesn't like people they can't control
(Updated: May 29, 2016)

I recently listened to the audio book Black Magic Sanction and found the character development enjoyable and interesting.  The plot moved quickly and kept me interested in the story of a young witch trying to survive in a world that doesn't like people they can't control. Rachel is a young witch with some extremely unusual powers and abilities but that is not the most interesting part of this book.

What I found most interesting is her strong relationships with her friends.  Much like a superhero team Rachel and her friends all blend their diverse skills well to help each other through some difficult situations.  Her friends include a family a pixies lead by Jenks, Ivy, a female vampire, and Al, the demon.

This book revolves around Rachel trying to avoid being captured by the white witches while learning about herself and her friends.

She needs to make hard decisions regarding accepting the "smut" of black magic for the unselfish reasons of helping her friends.  She also realizes that her close friends will always stay by her side and help her in her battles.  A new man comes into her life in this book and deciding if she should accept his assistance and love is a significant plot line of this book.

Writing this review makes me think I want to see what else Rachel is up to with her friends in the other books in this series.  The characters are so human and real that you want to know more about what they are up to. I rate this book a 5 out of 5 for the great character development and good pacing.  I recommend it for anyone that enjoys fantasy books with strong characters.  The world they live in is well developed with plenty of history.  You will have no problem reading this book on it's own even though it is the eighth book in the eleven book The Hollow series.
